Synaptophysin is involved in several key aspects of synaptic function. It helps in the sorting of other proteins, like synaptobrevin, into synaptic vesicles. It also plays a role in endocytosis, the process by which vesicles are recycled back into the presynaptic terminal after neurotransmitter release. Additionally, it influences neurotransmitter release and synapse formation. Synaptophysin is expressed in neuroendocrine cells in the adrenal medulla, carotid body, skin, pituitary, thyroid, lung, pancreas and gastrointestinal mucosa; as well as neurons of the brain, spinal cord, retina, and Paneth’s cells in the gastrointestinal tract and gastric parietal cells. The expression of Synaptophysin is independent of the presence of neuron-specific enolase or other neuroendocrine markers."}]}]}
