{"type":"root","children":[{"type":"paragraph","children":[{"type":"text","value":"Prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA), is a type 2 integral membrane glycoprotein found in the prostate and a few other tissues. The gene responsible for PSMA in the prostate also encodes folylpoly-gamma-glutamate carboxypeptidase in the intestine and N-acetylated alpha-linked acidic dipeptidase 1 in the brain. Three distinct proteins are produced through alternative splicing of a single gene. A mutation in the intestinal form may be associated with impaired intestinal absorption of dietary folates, resulting in low blood folate levels and consequent hyperhomocysteinemia. The form expressed in the brain may be involved in a number of pathological conditions associated with glutamate cytotoxicity. PSMA expression is the highest in the prostate and is up-regulated in cancerous prostate tissues. Detectable levels of PSMA are also found in the small intestine and the brain."}]}]}
