It plays a crucial role in regulating cell cycle progression, differentiation, and development, particularly during embryogenesis. p57 binds to G1 cyclin-CDK complexes and causes cell arrest in the G1 phase. A mutation of this gene can cause loss of control over the cell-cycle leading to uncontrolled cellular proliferation. The gene encoding human p57 is located on chromosome 11p15.5, a region implicated in sporadic cancers, Wilms tumor and Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome (BWS). P57 is expressed in villous cytotrophoblasts, villous stromal cells, and extravillous trophoblasts of placenta. Hydatidiform moles show a lack of p57 expression."}]}]}
