It is one of the three members of the bHLH family, with the other two members being OLIG1 and OLIG3. The expression of OLIG2 is mostly restricted in the central nervous system, where it acts as both an anti-neurogenic and a neurogenic factor at different stages of development. OLIG2 is expressed in neural progenitor cells and acts as a key regulator of oligodendrogenesis, promoting the generation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells and their subsequent differentiation into mature oligodendrocytes, which produce myelin sheaths around axons in the CNS. Aberrant expression of OLIG2 has been observed in various types of brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma and other diffuse gliomas (astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas and oligoastrocytomas)."}]}]}
