This protein is critically involved in maintaining the pluripotency and self-renewal of embryonic stem cells. OCT-4 is expressed in undifferentiated pluripotent cells, germ cells in ovaries and testes. Expression of the OCT-4 is potentially correlated with tumorigenesis and can affect some aspects of tumor behavior such as tumor recurrence or resistance to therapies.
