There are two types of cytokeratins: acidic type I cytokeratins and basic or neutral type II cytokeratins. Cytokeratins are usually found in pairs comprising a type I cytokeratin and a type II cytokeratin. Expression of these cytokeratins is frequently organ or tissue specific. Cytokeratin 19 (CK19) is a type I acidic cytokeratin. Unlike its related family members, this smallest-known acidic cytokeratin is not paired with a basic cytokeratin in epithelial cells. It is specifically found in the periderm, the transiently superficial layer that envelops the developing epidermis. Cytokeratin 19 is expressed in a wide variety of epithelium and epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin 19 is often coexpressed with cytokeratin 7."}]}]}
