AFP is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal life. This protein is thought to be the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, and the alpha-fetoprotein and albumin genes are present in tandem on chromosome 4. Positivities for AFP are seen in hepatocytes of fetal liver and hepatoma. Since only traces of Alpha-fetoprotein are found in adult serum, studies shown elevated levels suggest either a benign or malignant lesion of the liver, yolk-sac carcinoma, or one of a few other tumors."}]}]}
