The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test for cervical screening has considerably reduced the worldwide rate of mortality from cervical cancer. The most significant limitations of the conventional Pap smear include limited sensitivity, a significant proportion of inadequate specimens and a great deal of false negative smears. Most of these problems are due to limitations of sampling or slide preparation.
Studies have shown that only a small portion of the sample taken from the patient is transferred to the slide; most of it is discarded along with the sampling device. In addition, the difficult and time-consuming interpretation of conventional Pap smears is often aggravated by the presence of blood, mucus, obscuring inflammation, and air-drying artifact. These obscuring artifacts are also a major cause of inadequate specimens that result in repeat testing.
The CytoLayer Liquid Cytology System is an inexpensive alternative to other liquid-based cytology (LBC) tests for cervical cancer screening.
